TRAVEL MARKETING IN TODAY'S ECONOMY: The Importance of Creating Strong City Brands
June 2011
City branding is a marketing tactic that enables tourism boards
to make their cities more distinctive in consumers’ minds. As
with any product or service, it is important for cities and tourism boards to create
strong brand identities not just to make their cities appear more
attractive to travellers, but also to unify all marketing activities, including
travel advertising, travel promotions, and special events.
This white paper explores the evolution of city brands, and the importance of
focused, genuine travel branding to local economies through a closer
look at Las Vegas, NV and Austin, TX. It then identifies two
underappreciated U.S. cities, Portland, OR and St. Petersburg-
Clearwater, FL that would benefit from stronger travel branding efforts.
Through our branding assessments of these cities,
travel marketers will learn how to better position their destinations
to appeal to their target audiences and drive tourism revenues.
